ABOUT FINSWIMMING
Finswimming is an underwater swimming sport where swimmers race against each other with the use of floating and breathing equipment like masks, fins, snorkels and scuba diving set. The sport consists of four techniques involving swimming with the use of fins either on the water's surface using a snorkel with either monofins or bifins or underwater with monofin either by holding one's breath or using open circuit scuba diving equipment. Events exist over distances similar to swimming competitions for both swimming pool and open water venues. Competitions at world and continental levels are organized by the Confédération Mondiale des Activités Subaquatiques (CMAS) i.e. World Underwater Sports Federation.
The sport's first world championship was held in 1976. It also has been featured at the World Games as a trend sport since 1981 and was demonstrated at the 2015 European Games in June 2015. CMAS which is recognized by the IOC as the international sports federation for underwater sports was so recognized in 1986 solely on the basis of finswimming.
In 1999, finswimming was reported as being considered for inclusion in the 2004 Summer Olympics in Athens, Greece.[38] In 2002, the IOC considered underwater sports which includes finswimming as one of the sports to be added to the program of the 2008 Summer Olympics in Beijing, China, but decided to decline admission to it and eight other sports. TECHNICALITIES OF FINSWIMMING
Four techniques are used for finswimming, and races are conducted separately for all techniques. The techniques are:
1. Surface Finswimming
Swimmers use mask, snorkel and Monofins, and must always remain at the surface of the water. Individual races for 50, 100, 200, 400, 800, 1500 meters and relay races for 4 × 100m and 4 × 200 meter are held for his technique.
2. Bi-fins Finswimming
Swimmers use mask, snorkel and a pair of fins, and swim at the surface of the water. Races for 50, 100, and 200 meters are conducted in a swimming pool, and long distance races of 4km or 6km are conducted in open waters.
3. Apnoea finswimming
In Apnoea, competitors must be completely submerged and hold their breath for the duration of the swim. These races are only held for distances of 50m and aren’t held in open water due to safety concerns. The race below is the men’s 50m AP — or underwater — swim from the 2015 Baku European Games. Swimmers use mask and monofin and swim under water holding their breath. Only 50 m races are conducted for this technique. All races are conducted only in a swimming pool.
4. Immersion Finswimming
Swimmers use mask and monofin and swim under water using breathing apparatus. Races are conducted for 100m and 400m using this technique, only on a swimming pool.
